Oldrey Diary

Thanks to the GameShark, the popular cheating device, you can store this item, the Oldrey Diary, in your inventory. If you've played the game, you'll know that the diary can be found on Stage 3, the Villa, inside the library of the Oldrey Mansion, but because the book is bolted down, you can only read it. The fact that you can use the GameShark to unlock it as an inventory item tells you that it was to originally have an alternate use. When it appears in the inventory, its description just repeats its name ("Oldrey Diary"), and it has absolutely no use in this capacity. As for its alternate purpose: We can only assume that they'd let you carry it around as to make the headstone puzzle easier, wherein you can keep checking the diary for the proper order to push the buttons, should you forget--but they then decided that it'd be better to make you run back and forth. This would of course help pad the game's length. As Ralph Kramden would say: "Yoooooooooooou SNEAKS."
