Familiars
Familiars are little spirit helpers that follow Alucard around by flying or hovering overhead; each familiar has a special attack or an ability that will help guide him along. Because of the game's RPG nature, they, too, can gain levels as they help you defeat the enemies that litter the castle. The familiars become accessible to Alucard after he collects five special relics (seven in the Japanese versions) that are hidden somewhere in that castle.
Ghost Familiar
|
Bat Familiar
|
Demon Familiar
|
Faerie Familiar
|
Sword Familiar
|
|
(1) Ghost Familiar: The helper that follows you is very much like those you encounter as foes. When the ghost senses danger, it'll settle onto the enemy and sap its strength, destroying it. When the ghost reaches a certain level, it can begin using a soul steal.
(2) Bat Familiar: When you remain still near enemies, the bat will gear up and bat-dash toward them in a beam. If you morph Alucard into a bat while this leveled-up familiar is selected, it'll invite several other bat familiars to join you; when you blast a fireball, each of the helpers will blast one, too.
(3) Demon Familiar: Initially, the demon will only help clear the way by poking at enemies with its tiny spear. It has a special ability, though: It senses hidden switches and points them out to you before activating them. When it reaches a certain level, it gains the ability to attack with elements.
(4) Faerie Familiar: The faerie has no special attacks, as her powers are that of healing. She will cure any negative status administered upon Alucard (assuming you have any of that cure in your inventory), and she'll replenish your energy when it gets low. Her other ability is to sense when secret rooms are near and direct you to them; as an extension, she'll lend Alucard advice on how to clear certain obstacles (like the spike-lined, darkened Catacomb passage).
(5) Sword Familiar: Initially, the sword randomly darts in a direction and slashes in a circular motion; its intensity and power increases as it gains levels. When it reaches a certain level, it changes form; additionally, when it reaches this level, it becomes usable as normal weapon--the strongest in the game. If the familiar itself is selected at this time, Alucard cannot use the inventory version.
Japan-Exclusive Familiars (PlayStation and Saturn)
Sprite Familiar
|
Tengu Goblin Familiar
|
(6) Sprite Familiar: The sprite familiar is similar to the faerie familiar in that it will use your potions to improve your status when you're in trouble, and it'll inform you about nearby secret areas. Otherwise, you can bring out another of its hidden talents: You can get it to sing a song if you set Alucard in a chair while equipped is a Lyric Card. PlayStation-wise, this only works in later versions (like PlayStation: The Best and PSOne Books).
(7) Tengu Goblin Familiar: The final familiar is the "Tengu Goblin," a funny-voiced familiar with a sizable nose. Its voice is said to be that of a famous Japanese actor, and its inclusion was meant as a joke; the reference, that is, is unknown. As for its power: It's nothing more than an overpowered version of the imp familiar; it will track down nearby enemies and stab at them with its tiny spear.
Shield Spells
As mentioned for the equippable items: The shield rod can be used in conjunction with each of the shield types to create some type of magical effect or the amplification of a current stat. The exchange is that your magic meter will be drained appropriately. Please consult the shield descriptions for more information on the following images.

Sword of Dawn Summons
By equipping the Sword of Dawn, you may find that it has an alternate use. If you push, in one motion, down, down-forward and forward plus attack, the sword will come alive and summon certain helpers--six in all. The helper summoned is random, and in some instances, you will instead call a whole pack of them to guard and protect you. Below are those helpers.
Blue Bow Skeleton: It appears before you, kneeling, and fires forward two timed arrows. | Green Bow Skeleton: This skeleton archer fires forward two successive arrows at a lower arc. | Blue Guardian: A cloaked skeleton knight that marches about and attacks hapless enemies along the way. |
Green Guardian: A stronger cloaked skeleton that also destroys enemies within its path. | Wraith Arrow: A wraith that hovers in place and commands two arrows to appear and fly toward enemies. | Magic User: A Sypha-like magician that fires from overhead a Dracula-like energy orb. |
Group Attack: The six helpers appear and do their individual jobs before disappearing in their own ways. During this time, you can use them to ward off numerous enemies and duck behind them to use their presence as a shield. |
Spells
Considering his spawning, it's not hard to imagine that Alucard is also skilled in the black arts--mainly, he can utilize sometimes deadly magic spells. The chanting of magic spells requires that you memorize certain button combinations, some more complicated than the others. Each spell also drains a varying amount of Alucard's magic power. Note that none of the spells are necessary to the game's completion. (To see the combinations, click here.)
