Dracula Densetsu Rebirth -- translation: Legend of Dracula Rebirth (Japan) |
||||
Operation Guide Description This goes way back...before the era of Simon Belmont. The evil Count Dracula built his castle in the suburbs of Transylvania, summoning monsters from the other world by using innocent people as sacrifice. Now that Dracula has become a demon king, Christopher Belmont from a long line of vampire hunter ancestry set out on his journey to Dracula's castle in order to defeat him. |

Objective/Overview It's been accepted by the video-game industry, almost blindly, that the increasingly powerful modern-day consoles are no place for 2D (retail) games or at least the retro-themed fare whose values match those found in the classics from the 8- and 16-bit eras. Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth, which is the third in Konami's back-to-basics Rebirth series, is the product of that current mindset. As such, the 16-bit-styled Advventure Rebirth--a reimagining of the much-maligned Game Boy "classic" Castlevania: The Adventure--fits in well on the Wii's Shop Channel, whose Virtual Console classic-collection already hosts five much-celebrated series games. It's instead the original-concept WiiWare sub-section that finds itself home to Adventure Rebirth, which like its old-school counterparts features classic whip-and-jump action, this time spread out over six considerably long, challenging stages. The able Christopher Belmont will take hold of the Vampire Killer whip and the coveted sub-weapons and tackle Rebirth's derivative brand of traditional action-platforming, his mounting troubles entailing the cunning traps, dangerous split paths plus new and familiar foes (minor enemy, boss, and mid-boss alike) that fill the castle's enterior; an old-sytle time-limit will also complicate things. His successful navigation through the house of horrors will earn him a final confrontation with Count Dracula, who has a few new tricks up his cape. Rebirth doesn't have a save feature, but you can continue as many times as you'd like. If you find it too difficult, you can select an "Easy" mode in the options menu; likewise, you can choose a more challenging "Hard" mode if really want to test your skills. Too, you can select your preferred number of starting lives, up to "9." Since there's no "second quest" in deference to modes, you can otherwise find challenge in the "Classic" mode, unlocked after you clear the game; it's here where you take control of an intentionally more-limited Christopher. You can digitally down Rebirth right now for 1000 Wii points. |

Limitations: Christopher Belmont, once presented as a clumsy slog, is in this modern update quite the nimble fellow--his walking-pace quicker and his jumps controllable to the very end, affording him midair movement that if not Super Castlevania IV-level is at least comparable. His control of the Vampire Killer is traditional--he can only swing the whip left or right, and it can only be powered up once by normal means; he can otherwise collect a rare glowing crystal, which will grant the whip a short-ranged fireball-spewing property but only for a limited time. Important to know is that Christopher can damage enemies with the initial phase of a whip-stroke, protecting himself from enemies that attack from behind. He has the standard crouch but none of what we would call "advanced abilities" (stair-jumping and the like), making him a pretty standard old-school hero. |
