Simon Belmont
Though the Castlevania series is long-enduring and chronicles the exploits of a wide variety of heroes, it's no question that Simon Belmont is its most famous protagonist and the closest thing it has to a mascot. Be it do to the nostalgic sensibilities derived from his association with Castlevania--the 1987 NES classic and the series' first entry--or the large amount of titles in which he has starred, Simon Belmont is very likely the first name to come to mind whenever a longtime follower hears the word Castlevania. The ubiquitous Simon's credits also include Castlevania's direct sequel Simon's Quest; four iterations/remakes of his original adventure; a special appearance in Harmony of Dissonance, in which he participates as the 8-bit hero ripped directly from his NES lodging; and a large number of cameo appearances in Konami's mascot mashups and other collaborations, where he's bestowed the honor of representing the entire series. Simon is clearly one of Konami's go-to guys. The Castlevania Judgment version of Simon is an eclectic mix of his gruff Simon's Quest-boxart look and Castlevania Chronicles' red-haired wonder, which in modern times is his dominant form. Armed with the Vampire Killer whip and an iron will, Simon (perhaps taking a cue from Mario, a similarly transcendent company mascot) is the well-balanced character who doesn't excel in any given category but is otherwise solid all around. Simon thanks to the whip's length has nice physical range, which affords him the option of hanging back and attacking at a distance; though his whip-strikes lack in brute power, this allows him to nick at foes by stringing together normal strikes and combos without getting too close and thus vulnerable to counterattack. All things considered, Simon is the perfect character for beginners. |

"The sworn vampire hunters of the Belmont clan have long passed down a sacred whip known as the Vampire Killer, so that each new generation might wield it in their battle against darkness.
One fateful night, the heir to this dynasty, Simon Belmont, entered a dark forest. Having triumphed over Dracula, he was pursuing the last of the vampire's minions.
But suddenly, before his eyes, a strange spectacle unfolded..."
Encounter #1: Simon meets with a mysterious man who welcomes him to the time rift. Simon, baffled by this greeting, asks for an explanation. The ambiguous character tells Simon that the time rift is the place where "he'll find what he desires." A strange air about the place, Simon nonetheless agrees to take his word on the matter. The man introduces himself as Aeon, who asks if Simon's ready for the first trial. The two engage in a short battle, Simon proving his worthiness with an impressive showing; the road is thus open, Simon ready to search for the answers for which he longs.
Encounter #2: Random battle.
Encounter #3: Random battle.
Encounter #4: Simon meets a cloaked woman, who recognizes the Vampire Killer ("the Belmont whip," as she calls it); she asks that Simon show her its power. Simon declines, pronouncing that he will not fight a woman. Warning Simon not to underestimate her, she reveals herself to be Sypha Belnades, a hunter of the church. Cognizant of her legend, as one of the three warriors to fight beside his ancestor Trevor Belmont, Simon grants her request for battle. Simon emerges victorious.
Encounter #5: Random battle.
Encounter #6: Simon assails a quartet of mermen before battling a boss (Minotaur or Iron Gladiator)--a large adversary that makes a smashing entrance when the final minor enemy is just about defeated.
Encounter #7: Simon meets another person who recognizes the Vampire Killer whip. Simon immediately recognizes this specimen--an oddly garbed, clawed man--as Grant Danasty, the second of the trio of warriors who fought beside Trevor. Simon asks about Trevor's whereabouts, but the unimpressed Grant has no intention of revealing his friend's location. Simon has no choice but to beat the answer out of him. After disposing of Grant, Simon puts his senses to the test and can feel Trevor's lingering presence.
Encounter #8: Random battle with a "servant of Dracula."
Encounter #9: Random battle.
Encounter #10: Simon locates Trevor Belmont, who he greets with a questioning tone. Trevor figures that anyone with such a demeanor who should know of him has be a descendant. Simon enlightens Trevor as to his legendary status; Simon then declares that Trevor must be defeated if he hopes to attain the status of a "true Belmont." Trevor, likewise, declares that Simon must prove himself worthy of the whip by showing his steel. In defeating Trevor, Simon finally finds his answer: His power is more than just what the whip offers.
Encounter #11: Simon again meets with Aeon, right on time for some event. By Aeon's estimation, Simon is the chosen one. Having found his answer, Simon wonders of Aeon's purpose. Trapped here by a common foe, he claims, they must escape; the only means of escape is to bring together the souls imprisoned within the mysterious realm, after which the door to the enemy will open. Having already accomplished this, Simon seeks his exit but is warned that only a single being can enter the door. The two have no choice but to fight, to see who's worthy of the task--this is Aeon's true desire. After felling Aeon, Simon heads toward the door. "Leave the rest to me," he directs toward the fallen Aeon. "You may look on from there."
Encounter #12: Simon enters the door to only to find the terrifying Time Reaper (the final boss), who claims to have come from ten thousand years hence. Swearing on his honor as a Belmont, Simon promises to destroy this menace. After a long, intense battle, Simon vanquishes the hideous wraith. |
"Thus the rift in time was mended, and all were returned to their respective eras.
Six years later, a mysterious woman would tell Simon Belmont of the curse placed upon him.
To free himself from that curse, he would have to collect Dracula's remains -- his nail, heart, rib bone, eyeball, and ring -- and burn them all at the ruins of Castlevania.
And with that, Simon set off on a new quest... "
