During the early 90's, publisher Scholastic put out a series of books based on the many famous games and franchises that were appearing on Nintendo's NES console. The author of these licensed books is credited as F.X. Nine, which is a pseudonym, actually, for the group of people who worked to create the Worlds of Power. Entries into this series include but are not limited to those from Ninja Gaiden, Metal Gear, Bionic Commando, Blaster Master, Mega Man, Shadowgate and--oh, yeah--Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.
The theme of each book is essentially the same: A little kid is somehow transported into a video game world where he teams up with its main hero to save the world from its fiercest evil villain. In the Simon's Quest entry, it's junior high school student Tim Bradley who is summoned into Castlevania's universe to help Simon Belmont in his quest to find Dracula's five body parts. It's here, we learn, where Tim grows to overcome his fears by battling demons. Please don't ask me to explain any of this--I just work here.
