Mega Man X Characters

The Mega Man X series takes the story of the original Mega Man games and adds a mature touch to it. Its theme is very similar: X, Dr. Light's creation, is unsure of his place in life, trying to understand what his purpose is; despite a hate of violence, he's forced to fight so that he might sought the peaceful future his creator had intentioned for him. Each battle brings him closer to becoming that which he hates, and it causes him much pain.

Mega Man X

X was Dr. Light's final creation before his death. With the ability to think and make his own decisions, X truly seemed more like a man than a machine. When Dr. Cain found the capsule containing X, he was amazed by what Dr. Light had accomplished. X, though, became unsure of his place in life while Dr. Cain used Light's studies to create reploids; as the reploids fit in with the humans, X didn't know if he could. Of course, when Sigma went berserk, taking the Maverick Hunters with him, X, feeling a strong sense of justice, wanted to become a Maverick Hunter, despite having a hate of violence.

Each time X battled Sigma, he became more and more unsure of his place in life. He wondered if Dr. Light's dream of a perfect world where humans and reploids could live together was just a dream. He wondered why he had to fight—how long his pain would last. Instead of fighting towards peace, he felt that he was only adding to the destruction. Because of that, somehow, X always had a fear that he, too, might one day become a Maverick.

Dr. Cain

Dr. Cain was a prominent scientist. Among his many hobbies: Archaeological studies and ancient plant life. While on a dig to find Mesozoic plant life, he uncovered Dr. Light's lab, finding the capsule containing X not long after. Cain was so astounded by what he had found—so captivated by Dr. Light's designs—he decided to use those design notes to create his own reploid assembly line. Cain was ecstatic that the reploids were able to work alongside humans. When a small Maverick outbreak started, he consented to the Council's wish that a group of Maverick Hunters be created to keep peace amongst the humans and reploids.

His worst fear was realized when one his most intelligent, advanced reploids, Sigma—it containing his latest circuit designs—went Maverick, convincing a lot of the other Hunters to join him. Cain had always felt very responsible for the ensuing wars between the Mavericks and their Hunters and often had regrets about continuing Light's work.

Zero

Zero was the one-time leader of the Maverick Hunters—taking the lead after Sigma himself went Maverick—and was X's best friend. Zero's past remains a mystery, though it was revealed that, at one time, Zero was indeed a Maverick. It was then that Zero's personal war with Sigma started, as they were on opposite sides—even though Sigma's attitude suggested otherwise. Going further back, gaining its credit through Zero's dreams, it has been strongly hinted that Zero was actually a creation of Dr. Wily (a silhouette of Wily appearing to him, saying the words, "Go after him!" Also, a "W" was once in place of the blue gem on Zero's head.) And in Mega Man X3, Sigma referred to Zero as the "last of the doctor's creations," implying an evil tone to that certain doctor. Perhaps Wily created Zero to counteract Light's creating of X. Or maybe Wily made Zero to carry on his war against Light-created robots in future generations.

Anyway: Zero was always there to save X from danger early on, encouraging him to become stronger. Zero would also help out his friend every now and then during searches. Cunning and powerful, a master of the saber, it was Zero's personal war with Sigma that drove him. His battles had done all but harden him, as he sometimes wondered what it was he was fighting for.

(Of note: Many believe there's a connection between Zero and Proto Man from the regular series. It's not too far fetched, as Zero seems inspired by Proto Man. The most similar attribute is that Proto Man's log-number was "000," which might correlate into "Zero.")

Vile

Vile was once one of Sigma's top henchman. When Vile first encountered X, he had his way with him. It's believed that his association with Sigma soured when Vile became fascinated with the thought of destroying X and Zero himself. However, combining their powers, X and Zero were able to later take Vile down. Vile made it personal between himself and X, vowing to return. Vile was reconstructed by Dr. Doppler after Doppler had been infected with a Maverick virus. Still, even though Vile was stronger than before, X had become too powerful, Vile unable to defeat him. He'll probably return one day.

Dr. Thomas Light

Dr. Light was world-renowned for his creation of the original Mega Man and for his bitter rivalry with Dr. Albert Wily. Before he had died, he created X, a creation that would have the ability to think and choose its own path in life; he had hoped that X would reawaken 30 years into the future and be able to choose that path. To have contact with his creation, he hid capsules all over the world—capsules that enabled him to project his spirit as a holographic image.

Upon contact with X, Light was sad to see that his creation was forced to choose a path of war. To assist X, he hid other capsules all over the world, each containing armor upgrades that would make him more powerful. He had hoped that humans wouldn't fight with the reploids, no less fight with each other.

Sigma

At the time, Sigma was Dr. Cain's most advanced prototype reploid. With that in mind, Sigma was a no-brainer for leadership of the Maverick Hunters. Under Sigma's control, order and peace were restored, as no Maverick would dare oppose him. A tainted victory against then-Maverick Zero proved his superiority to the other reploids. During his reign as leader, Sigma gained an attitude that he was superior to all humans, as well. In turn, he felt the human population was regulating the growth of the reploid race. It's through that thought that Sigma believed the human race should be annihilated.

Soon after, Sigma went Maverick, convincing most of the other hunters to join in his rebellion. With an army of Mavericks backing him up, he was poised to launch a war against the humans. X, however, had other plans, as he thwarted Sigma's plots again and again. Sigma would keep showing up in newer, more powerful powerful bodies each time.

The truth of the matter was that Sigma was able to stay alive by thriving through computer systems as a virus. It was that power that made him almost impossible to destroy for good. Whether or not all of the Maverick outbreaks could be attributed to him remained a mystery. (Some have gone as far as saying that Sigma is actually possessed by Dr. Wily's spirit—the true virus.)

Agile, Serges and Violen

About 6 months after Sigma fell at the hands of X, Agile, Serges and Violen rebuilt and took control of the Maverick force while their master's whereabouts were in question. Watching X from the central computer of the Maverick base, monitoring X while he took down the Maverick bosses, they began to understand how their master could fall to such a seemingly small threat.

Taking it upon themselves, as sort of a test trial, they intervened during X's quest to get a taste of the enemy's power; to further their plans, they taunted X by gloating over their possession of the parts of Zero they collected after he was destroyed in the first game. After being dealt initial defeats—wherein X regained Zero's parts, preventing the Mavericks from repairing him for use in their rebellion—they later came at X with even more fury, with bigger, more powerful bodies, once X penetrated the Maverick base. Only after X defeated the last of the three leaders, Agile, did they reveal that Sigma was actually alive, having protected his silent rise as long as they could.

Dr. Doppler

Doppler was a scientist reploid, made to support humans in the making of other reploids. With his high-performance neuro-computer, he was instrumental in determining the cause of the Maverick outbreak. The anti-virus he created brought peace to the world. Dr. Doppler was later reprogrammed, whereas he'd build "Doppler Town"—a utopian world where humans and reploids could live together peacefully. Having grown too quickly, Doppler, unfortunately, became infected with the same Maverick virus he once remedied; he incited a new Maverick outbreak in Doppler Town, causing chaos. Changing his body into a war machine, he gathered all the reploids for a new battle with the humans.

Now a Maverick, his new goal was to create a newer, more powerful body for Sigma to occupy. Once confronted by X, Doppler regained his sanity, but it was too late—Sigma was back, bigger and better than before. With his sanity returned, he helped Zero create a new anti-virus that would seemingly destroy Sigma once and for all. It worked only temporarily.

Bit and Byte

As his first act after turning Maverick and leading a new Maverick uprising, Dr. Doppler created Bit and Byte. As his chief servants, they were sent to impede X in his quest to take down the Maverick regime. After having failed to slow him down, each taking a temporary loss in their respective battles, they fought X again in the Doppler-Town-based Maverick hideout—this time, though, they used Doppler's technology to combine their powers into one. Of course, they were defeated, and they haven't been seen since.

Double

Double was thought to have been one of Dr. Cain's latest support robots, helping Zero and X any way he could. While his prime directive was to assist the Maverick Hunters, his carelessness made him a prime target for many of the Hunters' jokes. Being able to take no more—tired of hiding his real directive—Double transformed into a bigger, more deadly reploid, killing some of the Hunters in his wake.

Unsuspecting, X ran into Zero in the Repliforce's base of operations, questioning why Double was there. Double, not yet revealing his intentions, laughing at X's naiveness, launched an attack on his once-friend. After having been defeated, Sigma would reveal that Double was not made by Dr. Cain; he was actually a Maverick spy who watched the Hunters' every movement.

Iris

Iris was the Colonel's younger sister. Distraught over the outbreak of the Mavericks and the sudden riot of the Repliforce, she was caught up in a greater war. During the riot, as the Sky Lagoon crashed into the Earth, she was saved by Zero. Her brother, the Colonel, was grateful for Zero's actions, but an ensuing fight between the two had Iris shaken further. Taking a strong liking to Zero, she assisted him in locating the Repliforce's Maverick headquarters, however painful it was to assist in an assault against her brother.

When she was unable to hopelessly stop Zero from locating the Repliforce and the Colonel, she intervened by turning herself into assault reploid, trying to stop him. Defeated, Iris pleaded with Zero to not fight her brother; she also asked for Zero's forgiveness. Zero, shocked and saddened by Iris' imminent death, screamed in angst, wondered what exactly it was he was fighting for. After Sigma's defeat, Iris' death would forever haunt him, making him lose hope.

The Colonel

As the youngest high-ranking officer in Repliforce, the Colonel was strict with his fellow soldiers, though he treated them and his sister with respect. After the Sky Lagoon crashed to the Earth, coming to save his sister, the Colonel found himself accused of being responsible for the carnage, furthermore treated as a Maverick. Refusing to throw down his weapons, he headed back to his Headquarters, where word reached that Repliforce was unfairly labeled. With the Colonel echoing the sentiment, Repliforce would build their own society in space, bringing no harm to their human counterparts but having a revolutionist attitude in mind where it pertains to the Hunters.

Having honor and pride in the Repliforce army, the Colonel embraced a battle with X, having always wanted to fight him. His efforts were in vain, though, as he was unable to buy Repliforce enough time fully transport into space.

The General

The General was the commander of Repliforce and was targeted as being the one who triggered the newest Maverick outbreak. In a meeting with Sigma, he refused to listen to Sigma's advice—that Repliforce fight the Hunters due to their never-ending quest to please the humans. The General, refusing, would later be coaxed into doing just what Sigma had recommended.

He rallied Repliforce, declaring that they'd create their own society deep in space; furthermore, they'd create a new weapon that would protect them from the Hunters. After falling in battle to X, the General was shocked to learn that Sigma would use the weapon Repliforce created to destroy all life on Earth. Sacrificing himself, apologizing to X for all the trouble he caused, the General stopped the weapon and saved the Earth.

Signas

Many years into the future, as the Reploid Wars raged on, Signas took over as the leader of the Maverick Hunters as a general. Signas wasn't the strongest of hunters, but his will and determination earned him the respect of his fellow reploids. The main reason he was selected to lead the hunters was his precise CPU, which allowed him to calculate the distances that the Enigma or the backup shuttle would have to travel in order to destroy the falling Eurasia Colony.

Alia

Alia was originally a researcher in reploid engineering. Since she mastered all types of programming language, her technical knowledge earned her a spot as a navigator for the hunters. During X and Zero's mission, she relayed them important information about the lie of certain areas and offered them other helpful tips, and she helped them to learn the usage of each of the weapons they acquired from the robot bosses, Light capsules, etc.

Douglas

Douglas was in charge of maintaining both the weapons and vehicles within the Maverick Hunter's possession. His technical knowledge, combined with the assistance from Alia, allowed him to make special weapons for X and Zero from the powers they acquired throughout their mission. He was the only one capable of launching the Enigma or the shuttle into space correctly.
