The
Maneater isn't really what it appears to be, for the dominant visual, the
great skull, is only the the habitat for giant insect that buzzes about within
the rather cramped shelter. As controlled by the insect, the floating menace
uses its three erratically moving tentacles to limit the hero's freedom of
movement, slowly cornering its prey and inflicting multiple hits; if the tentacles
stop moving, it's a direct warning that each is about to release a stream
of sonic-ring projectiles. The Maneater will attempt to thwart any effort
to pass beneath it by crashing itself into the ground, causing to debris to
spill out in either direction. It will otherwise toss out from any of its
openings bouncing bone fragments, which whether alone or en masse will form
yet another needless (and painful) obstacle.
