Hammer is another in a long line of merchants who wished to aid a series' hero; though, in contrast to past merchants, his role was much larger. Hammer was a solider who was dispatched by the army to investigate events at the Hakuba Shrine. His demeanor was that of an extremely rough personality, and he would only work when he felt like it. Indeed, Hammer was his own man, and he knew deep down that he wanted to retire from the army and open up his own business. He'd get that opportunity under less-than-desired circumstances. During his investigation, he was captured by the dark forces and imprisoned within Castlevania's study, where a terrifying Great Armor stood guard. It was Soma Cruz who in his mission cut through the evil-infested study and freed Hammer. The very grateful yet pushy Hammer wanted to make it up to Soma (who just wanted to get away from this "strange guy"), so he promised to head back to the castle entrance, where he would live out his dream and set up a "Weapons and Goods" shop. During each of Soma's visits, Hammer sold to the youth newer weapons and items, which greatly contributed to the mission. By the time it was over, Hammer had won over Soma and even made a few other friends in the form of Mina, Yoko, Julius and Arikado. Over the course of the next year, Hammer retired from the military and qualified as an actual licensed merchant. The aimless and irresponsible Hammer also became an information broker thanks to his shady business connections. It was through these channels that Hammer was able to relay to Soma Cruz the location of Celia Fortner and her cult's hideout (about which Arikado and the Church volunteers didn't want Soma to know) in the snowy mountain regions of Europe. When Soma arrived at the entrance, Hammer, who was tailing him, made known his presence. Soma was upset that Hammer took it upon himself to get further involved, but the rough and resolute merchant convinced the lad to let him stick around so that he could open up a shop and again assist in the mission. Though he would surely provide a helping hand, Hammer had an ulterior motive: He thought for sure that Yoko Belnades, on whom he had a secret crush, would also show up. He was saddened by her absence. However, nothing made Hammer as happy as to see Soma Cruz escort Yoko to an abandoned building right across the way from his very shop. He had it made: He could go about his business and keep an eye on Yoko. During Soma's visits to his shop, he continued to use the annoyed youth as middle man to find out about Yoko's true feelings. As of Dawn of Sorrow's conclusion, there's no word as to whether or not a relationship was forged. Regardless of his selfish motives, he again came through for his friend, and he, too, was there at mission's end to comfort the victorious hero. |
