In-Game Story Description Prologue The Order is a group of self-proclaimed followers of the dark lord. The wicked men and women seek to strengthen themselves by aligning with dark spirits and wish to raise count Dracula. In exchange, they hope to receive greater power and eternal life. For centuries the Belmont clan has fought against the evils of Dracula. A new generation of hunters has been called to send him back to the underworld. Desmond Belmont and his sisters, Zoe and Dolores, have found the connection between the Order and Dracula. The young Belmont must wield the Vampire Killer anew... |

Objective/Overview Castlevania: Order of Shadows is the most surprising release in a long time, as it shows the industry's continued shift toward accepting handheld and mobile gaming as anything but an auxiliary activity in deference to consoles and PCs. Order of Shadows is truly the mobile platform's first unique series title where there previously have lurked only reimagined ports of Castlevania, the original NES classic. Taking a cue from recent entries, Order of Shadows, though short in length, is an adventure-RPG where the hero--Desmond, the more traditional Belmont warrior--can freely move through five castle areas (five levels of The Order's mansion) in his mission to put a stop to a diabolical scheme hatched by Rohan Krause, a member of The Order. At Desmond's command are a leather whip, which will see superior forms, and a number of typically-used sub-weapons, both old and new. Sprinkled in are some modern series elements: He'll by defeating bosses acquire new abilities and thus further mansion accessibility, he'll gain levels (limited to 10) through the earning of experience, he'll keep an inventory of healing items, and he'll put to use alchemy-based powers once a special bracelet is found. In keeping with tradition, the clearing of the normal mode unlocks a "Hard Mode," in which the enemies are tougher and appear in greater number; too, it unlocks "Classic Songs" (all taken from the NES' own Castlevania), which replace the game's normal soundtrack pieces. Taking it a step further: The clearing of "Hard Mode" unlocks "Unlimited Items," a mode through which you can play with all weapons already inventory-held and with unlimited use of all the aforementioned. Limitations: Desmond is a stiff little fellow but by all means is your classic-style whip-and-jump hero; he moves, climbs and jumps slowly, and has limited control over a jump's momentum--he can only while airborne stop in place or turn to face the opposite direction. Though not convenient, he has two types of jumps: One executed normally while standing or moving or a "set jump" that automatically propels him forward from a standstill. Upgrades include the procuring of stronger whips (in this case the Flame and Vampire Killer whips) and those skills standard (the back dash, slide and double jump). Perhaps helping to overcome his more diminished fighting skill is the ability to collect and equip sub-weapons of varying nature, including the traditional sort and some striking weapons, and his eventual use of alchemy-based spells, any artifact of which can only be used once per collection. |
